Checking vehicle debts

Three types of fee appear in a vehicle check:

  • Road tax (seyrüsefer) licence fee. Paid every year in the vehicle’s registration month. A late payment surcharge is added if it is not paid on time. Road tax guide
  • Inspection fee. Appears when your inspection period opens; a higher fee applies outside the inspection days. Inspection check
  • Vehicle exit fee. Paid each time you take your vehicle out of the TRNC. Vehicle exit fee

If a vehicle has an outstanding inspection fee, its road tax and vehicle exit fee cannot be paid online; if it has unpaid road tax, the vehicle exit fee cannot be paid online either.

Which vehicles can I check?

The check is done with the plate together with the vehicle owner’s ID (tax) number. If the number does not match the owner, no result is returned. So you cannot check someone else’s vehicle by plate alone.

If you are buying a used car, run the check together with the seller. The ownership type shows whether the vehicle is under a lien, and you see its debts and insurance status at the same time.

Vehicle check: frequently asked questions

Can I check a vehicle by plate number in North Cyprus?

The plate alone is not enough. The check is done with the plate together with the vehicle owner’s ID (tax) number. If the number does not match the owner, no result is returned.

How do I check vehicle debts?

You can check them on the government’s online tax portal using your vehicle and ID details. The result shows road tax, inspection and vehicle exit fees separately. If you add your vehicle to OtoAssist once, you see the amounts due without entering your details every time.

How can I tell whether a vehicle is under a lien?

The ownership type field in the vehicle details shows whether the vehicle is pledged (under a lien).

How can I check a used car before buying it?

Because the check uses the vehicle owner’s ID number, ask the seller to run it together with you. You can look at road tax and inspection debts, ownership type and insurance status together.

How do I find out whether a vehicle has third-party insurance?

Third-party (traffic) insurance is checked at the North Cyprus Insurance Information Centre (KKSBM) with the plate and the policyholder’s ID number. In OtoAssist it appears with the current policy, company and expiry date.

Where do I pay vehicle debts?

Road tax, inspection and vehicle exit fees are paid on the card payment page of the government’s online tax portal. OtoAssist takes you to this official payment page.
