Find out whether your car’s third-party (traffic) insurance is valid, which company it is with and when it expires. OtoAssist reminds you before your policy runs out.
- Mandatory
- A vehicle without a valid policy may not be used on the road.
- KKSBM
- Policies are registered with the North Cyprus Insurance Information Centre.
- 1 month – 1 year

Is third-party insurance mandatory?
Yes. Under the Motor Vehicles (Third Party Insurance) Law, no one may use a motor vehicle on the road without a valid policy covering third parties. Allowing someone else to drive an uninsured vehicle is equally prohibited.
In North Cyprus (TRNC), this insurance is usually called traffic insurance (trafik sigortası) or third-party insurance (üçüncü şahıs sigortası).
Third-party insurance vs comprehensive insurance (kasko)
| Third-party insurance | Kasko | |
|---|---|---|
| Mandatory? | Yes | No, optional |
| What does it cover? | Damage caused to others | Damage to your own car |
| Required at inspection? | Yes, the original certificate | No |
Penalty for driving without insurance
Driving an uninsured vehicle is a traffic offence.
- Out-of-court fine. The on-the-spot fine issued by the police is 25% of the minimum wage plus 20 penalty points (Road and Traffic Offences (Out-of-Court Settlement and Penalty Points) Law).
- In court. If the case goes to court, Article 3 of the Third Party Insurance Law provides for a fine of up to three times the monthly minimum wage, up to one year in prison, or both.
- Driving ban. The court may also disqualify you from driving. Under the law, unless the court sees a special reason, the ban is at least six months for a first offence and at least twelve months for a repeat offence.
When must you show the insurance certificate?
- When the police ask. The driver must show the insurance certificate. If they do not have it with them, they may take it in person to the police station they named to the officer at the time and show it there; the law sets a period of two days for this.
- After an accident involving injury. If the certificate cannot be shown at the scene, the accident must be reported to the nearest police station within 24 hours at the latest and the certificate must be shown.
- At the inspection. The original third-party insurance certificate is required at the vehicle inspection (MOT).
How to check third-party insurance
Policies are registered with the North Cyprus Insurance Information Centre (KKSBM). The lookup uses the number plate and the policyholder’s ID number. If the policy is in your spouse’s or your company’s name, you need their ID or passport number, or the company registration number.
From your insurance company
The company or agent that issued your policy can give you the policy number and expiry date. If you have more than one car, you have to ask about each one separately.
With OtoAssist
- Enter your number plate and ID number once.
- See your active third-party insurance and comprehensive insurance (kasko) with the company, policy number and expiry date.
- Get a notification before your policy expires and request a new quote in the app.
