What is road tax (seyrüsefer)?
Road tax (seyrüsefer) is the licence fee that vehicles registered in North Cyprus (TRNC) pay to be allowed on the road. Its official name is the Road Licence Fee (Seyrüsefer Ruhsat Harcı), and it appears on the government’s online tax portal under the car’s number plate. The licence is renewed annually or every six months; an unpaid fee builds up as debt.
When is it paid?
Road tax is paid within the month in which the car was registered in the TRNC, by the last day of that month. For example, a car registered in April pays between 1 and 30 April every year. That is why everyone’s payment month is different; there is no single “road tax month”.
Those who renew their licence every six months pay the second period by the last day of the month in which the first six-month licence ends. With six-monthly renewal, the annual amount is increased by 20% and half of it is paid for each period.
You can see your own period by checking: the portal shows the first and last payment dates together.
Discounts by vehicle age
For private vehicles, the discount is based not on the model year but on the time elapsed since the car was first registered in the TRNC. The portal states which discount has been applied to your car in the fee description.
| Vehicle | Discount |
|---|---|
| Less than 5 years since first registration | None |
| More than 5 years | 15% |
| More than 10 years | 40% |
| More than 15 years | 60% |
| Special cases | Discount |
|---|---|
| “Z” plate rental cars and driving school cars (up to 10 years old) | 30% |
| Classic and rally vehicles | 65% |
| Agricultural tractors | Exempt |
The rates come from the fee schedule in the Official Gazette of 30 April 2026 (in force since 1 May 2026). For the classic car discount, the car must be recognised as a classic by a club and approved by the Department of Antiquities and Museums (Eski Eserler ve Müzeler Dairesi).
5% discount for regular payers: Those who pay road tax on time and without late-payment surcharges for four years, without the car changing hands, pay the next period with a 5% discount.
What happens if you are late?
- A late-payment surcharge is added. A fee not paid on time is collected with a late-payment surcharge under the Collection of Public Receivables Procedure Law. On debts left unpaid for years, the surcharge can exceed the fee itself.
- You lose the 5% regular-payment discount. The discount depends on the fee being paid on time and without surcharges.
- Driving an unlicensed vehicle is an offence. The out-of-court fine for driving without a road licence is 10% of the minimum wage.
- An inspection debt blocks payment. If the car has an inspection debt, road tax cannot be paid online; the inspection debt must be cleared first.
